Shimelis B. Gulema has a PhD in History from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He has extensive experience in research and teaching both in Africa (in the 1990s) and the US (since 2003). His area of research includes the study of globalization, urbanization, postcolonial and transnational migration and identities, and issues of environment and development. His research findings have been published as a monograph, book chapters and articles in a number of reputable journals. He is now working on two book projects, one on City as Nation and the other on developmentalism and illiberalism. Currently, he teaches modern African history and politics at Stony Brook University where he also serves as a member of different committees including the Globalization Studies Initiative. He is also a board member of several organizations, professional and academic, based in Africa and the US (African Human Mobility Review in South Africa, to cite a few).
